Francis William Mosher Sr and Jr

Francis William Mosher Sr, born 8 Nov 1875 in Nova Scotia. He was the second child of William Henry Mosher (see separate biography) and Isabella Briden (1847-1929). He left Nova Scotia in 1895 for California in the U.S.A. to further his prospects. His father was the last of the Shipbuilding line of the Harvie-Mosher Shipyards. The industry coming to its conclusion. Francis Sr met and married Carolyn Vera Pedlar in San Francisco, California 1903. Francis Jr enlists in World War 2 on 10 April 1942. Is stationed in Alaska according to Newspaper report dated 14 January 1944.


Francis Jr marries Eleanor Jane Sanborn in 1944.

6 June 1965, Speaker talk by Francis Jr, "Ten easy ways to kill a Rhododendron" as a Charter Member of the California Chapter, American Rhododendron Society.


6 August 1981, Francis William Mosher Jr dies in Marin, California. He is buried in Cyprus Lawn Memorial Park.





Francis Mosher worked for Weyman and Mosher firm at the time of his wedding in 1903 and the couple were involved in their local Church. They had two children, Francis William Jr born in 1905 and Carol born in 1908 in San Francisco, CA. 


Francis's father William Henry Mosher dies on 13th October 1903 in Avondale, Nova Scotia aged 67 years.


​A huge earthquake struck San Francisco on Wednesday 18th April 1906 at 5.12am Pacific Time. More than 3,000 people died and 80% of the city was destroyed. The family was not physically injured but the event would have devastated the city.


In the 1910 U.S. Census, Francis William Sr is 34 years and is listed as a Merchant in the Dairy Industry, self -employed. Carolyn is 30 years, Francis Jr 4 years and Carol aged 2 years.


In the 1920 U.S. Census, Francis William Sr is 44 years and there seems to be an error as his wife is listed as Catherine not Carolyn. Francis is listed as a Merchant, Dairy Produce. Francis Jr is 14 and Carol is 11 years.


In 1923 Francis attends Lowell High School in San Francisco, aged 16 years in this school photo.





















In 1926 in the City Directory, Francis Sr is listed as a Real Estate Agent and Francis Jr as a Student. They live at 1342 Shrader St?


On 16th April 1927, Francis Jr is reported as a Stanford University Alumnus from the College of Journalism, who will sail to Australia where he will work in Sydney on the Agricultural Newspaper "Farmer and Settler" for 1 year. 


In the 1930 U.S. Census, Francis William Sr is 54 years and lives with Carolyn aged 50. He is listed as a Broker in Real Estate.

The children no longer live at home.


Carolyn dies on 4th February 1931 in San Francisco California aged 51 years.


Carol Mosher marries Chris Bergtholdt on 31 Dec 1931 in Auburn, California.


In the 1940 U.S. Census, Francis Jr is aged 34 and working as a News Editor (see opposite newspaper article) in Corning, Tehama, California.
